As Evgeny Bobryshev continues his return to form off-the bike, so the results follow on the bike. After finishing the timed practice fourth fastest, Bobby followed that up with fourth in the qualifying race this afternoon.

Feeling at his strongest so far this season, he completed a great deal of testing with Team HRC and the CRF450RW between the last MXGP in France and this weekend, and the hard work is paying off.

From eighth position away from the gate, Bobby chased through the field with podium-pace to climb to an eventual fourth, just adrift of Steven Frossard in third.

The heavy rains that were forecast didn’t materialise, although a light shower dampened the track just before the qualifying race, and the clouds provided a welcome break from the sun that pushed temperatures to 36 degrees Celsius.

On Saturday evening Bobby was also joined by HRC’s MX2 rider Tim Gajser in unveiling to the media the 2015 Honda CRF450R and CRF250R bikes as Honda continues its development of production motocross bikes closely allied to its factory presence in the FIM Motocross World Championship.

"After France I needed racing confidence through more time on the bike and I’m getting this back race by race now. After Spain and France it was much better and here in Italy it was good today – to finish fourth and be in touch with the lead group. We’ve all been working hard again with the testing since France and have improved the bike again, and we still need a little something but we’re working on it and getting closer every week and every race. I’ve been just missing some speed in a few places in a few sections but we’re working on this and it’s making it easier for me to stay close to the front. I’m looking forward to tomorrow, and for sure today gives you confidence for Sunday. I’d like to thank HRC and Honda for all the work so far as it’s really beginning to show now."

"It was a nice qualifying from Bobby today. A better start – an advantage from the testing this week – put him in a better position from the start and it was then nice to see his fitness coming back. We worked well in the testing this week and I think we have come out with a good solution, which showed today. He was able to run with the lead three all the way, riding sensibly and keeping it safe, so I’m very pleased with Bobby’s performance today."
