Switzerland returns to offer Fernandez redemption
Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez will be hoping to get back on the podium this weekend as Frauenfeld, Switzerland makes a welcome return to the 2023 MXGP World Championship calendar, having last hosted a round in 2018.
This time around the track will be in a slightly changed location, a few hundred metres from previous event and there will also be a unique schedule to take into account the Easter Sunday festivities, with the action being split between Saturday (April 8th) qualifying day, and then Easter Monday (April 10th) when the GP racing will take place.
Last time out in round two, Fernandez had a mixed showing in Sardinia at the deep sand track of Riola Sardo, with the Spaniard scoring 10 points on the Sunday, after what was an impressive Saturday when he came sixth in the points-scoring qualification race. This followed on from his highly successful Team HRC debut, when he stormed to the GP victory at the MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina, taking his first ever race win and overall in the MXGP class, in what was a brilliant performance from the #70.
Unfortunately, reigning champion Tim Gajser won’t be joining Fernandez as he still recovers from his broken femur. Progress has been good though and he is on the right path to getting back behind the starting gate in the near future. However, this is still too early for the Slovenian and he’ll instead be cheering on his teammate from afar, in what should be an interesting GP on a new track, with a different schedule and in a season that has provided plenty of exciting moments already.

Sardinia didn’t go to plan, but I’m still feeling good with my riding and I know that Switzerland offers another chance to get some good results. In the weekend off, I raced the Spanish championship, which I won, so that was a nice confidence booster as it is always good to lead laps and win races and just enjoy races without too much pressure. However, I know the competition will be tougher at Frauenfeld, but as my win in Argentina proved, I am capable of getting it done, and that will be the goal again over this extended Easter weekend.

It was a shame that Ruben’s Sunday didn’t go as well as his Saturday in Sardinia. We knew going in that it would be tough in the sand, but he showed on Saturday he had the speed to compete at the front of the field. Now we are trying to get him riding with that belief again and if he does that, we think this could be a really good track for him. The Sunday off will be a bit of a weird experience for everyone, and then racing on Monday, but it is good to be going back to Switzerland as we have had some really good events there in the past.
