Vlaanderen makes up for early tumble in RedSand’s MX2 qualifying race
Calvin Vlaanderen crossed the finish line in 18th place aboard his 2018 Honda CRF250RW machine in today’s third-round MX2 qualifying race, at the RedSand MX Park in Spain.
The 21-year-old South African of Team HRC did not enjoy the perfect launch from his gate and soon afterwards had a crash in the last sector during the opening lap. After re-joining the race in 31st position, Vlaanderen got up to speed and showed a top-5 pace, which allowed him to make his way back to 18th place before the chequered flag was waved.
The final day of the MXGP of La Comunitat Valenciana will be contested tomorrow, with the two races of the MX2 class scheduled at 13:15 and 16:10 local time (GMT +2).

I felt great on the bike throughout the whole day. Free practice went well and I was quite quick in timed practice too, although I couldn’t really put together the right lap. I had an OK start to the qualifying race – I was sleeping on the line which was my fault – but then I went down on the first lap. When you’re stuck in the back of the field things can get a bit chaotic with riders doing all sorts of things. I got a good rhythm afterwards, which allowed me to make up several places. I’m not happy with today’s result, but I’m very motivated to do well as the speed is there.

Today hasn’t gone the way we wanted and expected, but despite the result Calvin has showed good speed. He didn’t get the perfect start, which ended up being a factor in his crash as it’s not easy to ride here whilst in the middle of the pack. Nothing is lost, and I’m sure if he gets a good launch tomorrow he’ll be able to battle for a strong result.
