The deep sand of Lommel, Belgium is next up for Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez and Tim Gajser, as they both look to continue their different trajectories in this 2023 MXGP World Championship.

Fernandez is just a few points behind third place in the standings, and heads to Belgium off the back of a consistent run of top six finishes. However, sand isn’t his preferred terrain and he knows that it will be a big challenge to maintain that form over the course of the weekend. In saying that, the Spaniard has made great strides in a lot of his skillset in 2023 and this track will provide the perfect chance for him to show everyone just how much he has improved on this most difficult aspect of riding.

Teammate Gajser now has one round under his belt, after making his return to racing at the MXGP of Czech Republic last weekend, and after an excellent fifth place in the second moto, he’ll head to Lommel with a bit more confidence that his recovery is on the right track. Having won at the proclaimed ‘toughest race in the world’ in previous years, the #243 knows how difficult it is to have success in Lommel, but with the pressure off, he also knows that he has the ability to mix it up with the best in the world. However, he will be the first to admit that his main goal is to be building towards 2024 now, and with riding sand being an important ability, this is an excellent test for him and the Honda CRF450R to prepare him for the challenges ahead.

Coming from the hard-pack hillside of Loket, to the deep sand of Lommel is never an easy-task, especially in back-to-back weekends, but both riders will use the few days in between to get in some last-minute practice in similar conditions before making their way to infamous industrial estate that is home to the circuit, that has recently undergone a facelift in preparation for this 13th round of the world motocross championship.

The last few rounds have been okay, but not great so I’m hoping that I can just enjoy things a little more in Lommel. I know that won’t easy, because the track is so tough there, but my aim is to get a much better feeling for my riding and hopefully that should lead to better results. The only other sand round that we’ve had was Sardinia, where I was feeling really good on Saturday, but then things didn’t go my way at all on Sunday, so I want to be consistent across the three races and show everyone I can mix it up in the deep sand.

Tim Gajser 243

I knew last weekend would be tough, and that this weekend wouldn’t really be any easier, but that was going to be the case wherever I came back and overall, I was happy with how Loket went. Having such a long layoff from racing is just a difficult thing to overcome and it doesn’t matter how much training you do, you can’t replicate a real gate-drop. Now that’s out of the way though, so I can just focus on riding more and getting laps in and getting back to normal, rather than it all being about ‘the return’. I would like to thank all the fans that came out to see me over the weekend in the Czech Republic, it was something I really missed and it really felt cool to hear everyone around the track.

It really was great to have a full house under the Team HRC awning in Loket. It’s something we’ve missed and it was a nice boost for everyone. On the track, Tim and Ruben both gave everything they had and really, it was especially good to see Tim up battling around the top five positions. Lommel of course is a totally different challenge and the aim now is to make sure the riders are prepared as much as possible for the sand, which is always a big test for the riders and our bike technicians.
