Calvin Vlaanderen has secured the sixth gate pick for tomorrow’s two MX2 World Championship races at Semarang, where the MXGP of Asia is currently being contested. The sole standard bearer of Team HRC for the class rode smartly around the high-speed, hard-pack 1.750km brand-new Indonesian motocross racetrack aboard his Honda CRF250RW machine, putting himself in a solid position ahead of the thirteenth race day of the 2018 season.

Calvin was seventh a brace of turns after the start but soon moved up to fifth during the opening lap of the moto. He then dropped one position to Thomas Covington and did not manage to stay close to the American. As the race progressed, Vlaanderen found himself on a lonely ride; his pace, however, was quick enough to keep Anthony Rodriguez at bay as the Venezuelan tried to close the gap in the final stages of the encounter.

MX2 action will continue tomorrow with the 15-minute warm up at the usual time of 10:20, with the two races moved one hour forward compared to the European schedule – and will begin at 12:15 and 15:10 local time (GMT +7).

The race went well. The track is good, very fast but with deep ruts and few spots where to overtake; it was also hot out there so my priority was to get a good gate-pick without wasting too much energy or taking any unnecessary risk. I feel good on the bike and ready physically and mentally for tomorrow; it’s going to be a tough race day given the temperatures, but we’ll do our best tomorrow and hopefully we’ll get two strong results.

Calvin rode a smart race and did well in not taking any risks. The track is rough and the temperatures are sky high, so we’re happy with what he did. This track seems to suit his style, so we’re confident he’ll perform at a high level tomorrow. It’s going to be a very demanding race day both physically and mentally, but we’re ready for it.
