Calvin Vlaanderen has put together a very solid performance in qualifying as the MX2 field took part in the opening day of the MXGP of Lombardia at Ottobiano. Under extreme temperatures in northern Italy, the Team HRC rider was third aboard his Honda CRF250RW at the end of the 13-lap moto.

Vlaanderen attacked the first corners of the race the perfect way as he made all the way up to fourth place despite a not-too-perfect start. After dropping down one position, the young South African rider successfully overtook Pootjes for fourth before being promoted to third place when reigning champion Jonass crashed out. Once in third position, Calvin maintained a good pace up to the finish line.

The two MX2 races for the eleventh round of the season will get underway tomorrow at 13:15 and 16:10 local time (GMT +2).

I didn’t have a good feeling with the track in free and timed practice, so I was open-minded getting into the race: I cleared my head, got a good start and rode in the top-five in the first few laps. I made a few passes and then another rider went down, so I finished third. I also tried to save energy for tomorrow as it’s going to be a tough racing day. I’m happy with my riding and my rhythm was good, so I look forward to tomorrow.

It was the kind of Saturday that makes a team happy, as we were able to improve throughout the day after some difficult time in free and time practice. Calvin couldn’t get a good lap-time and was unable to ride as smooth as he normally does, but in the Qualifying race he was aggressive and competitive right from the start. Third place is a good result, so I think we are ready for a hot racing day in Italy!
