Gutsy recovery ride to sixth for Bobryshev in Latvia
Evgeny Bobryshev demonstrated once again today his remarkable grit and determination, coming back from yesterday’s big first corner crash that left him unsure about even racing today to take sixth overall.
With his shoulder still causing him a lot of pain this morning, Bobby took to the track in warm-up to gauge his feeling. Completing just two laps, it was clear the shoulder was still causing him a lot of pain and problems on the bike, throwing his participation in the race into question.
Bobryshev started race one from the very outside gate after his DNF yesterday, having received injections in his shoulder from the track’s medical team just beforehand. From last he moved himself to 25th from the start, and by the first five minutes has risen to 11th. Continuing to push through the pain, he moved to a high of eighth until the final ten minutes when he’d given his absolute all, taking the flag in an impressive ninth.
That left him with nothing left immediately after the race, but he recovered to go again in race two. Running an even more impressive fifth for most of the race, he crossed the finish line in sixth to take sixth overall in the Grand Prix.

“I gave everything I had in the races today. I didn’t sleep so well last night with the pain in the shoulder and this morning I was not so sure how well I would feel on the bike. After warm-up this morning I really didn’t think I could a whole race. With a lot of work with the team physio actually we could have a pretty good day in the circumstances though. I really want to thank the team and the medical staff because they did a lot of hard work with me this weekend. And my wife and father for helping me last night because with the pain I really couldn’t do much myself. Towards the end of the races it was so tough as I couldn’t hold on anymore so I couldn’t push any harder. Of course the crash yesterday was a big shame, but given that we weren’t sure how well we’d be able to race today, we have to be reasonably satisfied.”

“There were two remarkable performance that we saw in Latvia today – Bobby riding as well as he did after his injury yesterday when we really thought he wouldn’t be able to last one moto, and Tim Gajser who took what I think is the best MXGP victory of his career. Both riders showed the most incredible determination and fight – Bobby through the pain, and Tim through also a little pain from his crash to come back from 23rd to 4th to win the GP. I’m so proud of both of these guys because it takes a lot to come back from the circumstances they were both in, and to be honest they exceeded our expectations. Bobby even making the first race today was in doubt, and after Tim’s crash there’s no way we could have expected him to do what he did and come back through the field with such speed. It’s performances like this that are remembered for a very long time.”
